THE MEDIEVAL CASTLE OF ERGEME

Ceramic tile stove

During 2016-2019 archeological research took place in one of the rooms in the southern building of the Castle. It revealed a ceramic tiled stove of the 17th century, which is thought to have been destroyed in a fire in 1658 or 1670. There were unglazed vessel as well as green glazed panel stove tiles in the layer of rubble in the room. Their state of preservation differs - there are individual whole specimens, but mostly they were compressed and broken when the stove collapsed, the glazing of some glazed stove tiles was damaged by fire. Findings of stove tiles in archeological material of Latvia are not uncommon, but the tile stove found in the Medieval Castle of Ergeme has been completely preserved after its collapse since the room has been left intact.
