THE MEDIEVAL CASTLE OF ERGEME

Coins

A legend tells that after the Battle of Omuli (Homeln, Hummel) in 1702, when Ergeme Castle was destroyed by Swedish soldiers, they hid the army's treasury here. While the legend is still awaiting its confirmation, some copper and silver coins found here testify to the activity in the Castle. They are mainly the shillings of the King of Poland, Sigismund III (1587-1632), Riga and Livonian shillings of the rulers of Sweden, Christina (1632-1654) and Charles XI (1660-1697), but the oldest coin is the silver shilling of the Bishop of Courland and Ösel-Wiek, Magnus Arensburg, minted in 1567.
