Jaana Kokko's exhibiton “24 Moments From The Archive”

The exhibition 24 Moments From The Archive in the Valka Museum of Local History shows two films of the Finnish artist and film maker Jaana Kokko. Both films are shown in the exhibition space as photo essays, 12 still images taken from the timelines of the films.

Kokko worked several short periods in Valka during the years 2016 – 2020. Her film Roma Mountain (Porridge Hill) was finished in 2022. The film takes as its point of departure the memories and work of the controversial Finnish-Estonian writer, businesswoman and leftist politician Hella Wuolijoki (1886–1954), born as Ella Murrik. However the film focuses on the experiences, everyday life and work of the people living at the present-day border, asking what remains alive in a place from which the protagonist has already left? This film is shown during the exhibition according to the program.

During the time Kokko was editing the film of the border city Valga/ Valka in 2019, she got interested of another place on the border. This time it was on the Finnish – Russian border, a village where her family is coming from and where she spend her childhood summers. The second film Mansikkapaikka (2019–) (Strawberries) is a work-in-progress and it is a continuation of the film done in Valga/ Valka.

Both films are dealing with both oral and embodied histories, history of the soil and plants, family, politics and trauma.
