Valka - birthplace of the indenpendence of Latvia

The exhibition "Valka – the birthplace of the independence of Latvia" is compiled as a story about social and political events in Valka from 1914 till 1920 when Latvians, like other nations, in 1918 fulfilled their dream about their own state. Preparatory works to organize the Latvian state and the establishment of the North Latvia Brigade in Valka have been especially highlighted.

The exhibition consists of four senses – the Road, the Council, the Headquarters and the Home – that reveal the following topics:

the town of Valka;

refugees;

foundation of the Latvian Farmers’ Union (1917);

the Latvian Preliminary National Council (1917);

the Latvian Preliminary National Theatre (1918);

the Iskolat – the preliminary government of the Soviet Latvia;

establishment of the North Latvia Army (1919);

the general Pēteris Radziņš.

Traditional ways of exhibiting collections are combined with interactive multimedia solutions.

Information and summaries have been translated into Estonian and English.

The exhibition was opened on December 2, 2017, within the framework of the centenary programme of Latvia and was dedicated to the centenary of the Latvian Preliminary National Council (LPNC).
